The Trulli Story
Trulli Baci was established in 2010 by Entrepreneur Alex Meazzini, after discovering the shortage of Baci Chocolate within the UK. As a way of testing the market, Alex bought a single case of Baci and hasn't looked back since. Setting out on a mission to find that distinctive brand name, he knew that it needed to be closely associate with Baci Perugina whilst also referring to his family's English/Italian heritage. It was during a family holiday to the Idyllic Puglia region of Italy that would prove to be the light bulb moment.
Alex said "We had decided to visit the historic town of Alberobello which is famous for its prehistoric 'Trulli' huts. It was here where the name came to me 'Trulli Baci'. It's the perfect blend of English/Italian and allows us to play on the words Trulli in the English sense whilst sticking to the Italian Baci roots. Thanks to the brand name it has allowed us to position ourselves as a worldwide specialist in Baci Chocolate."
The remarkable story of Baci started with the two Perugian founders, Buitoni and Spagnoli, they set up a small workshop back in 1907. Little did they know that their business would grow to become a true Italian confectionery icon as the story behind the creation of this chocolate is a romantic and passionate tale which dates back to 14th February 1922, when Spagnoli decided to include a love note with each chocolate for her sweetheart.
It was too hard to keep this chocolate a secret and quickly became Italy's number one chocolate. The chocolate was first named “Cazzotto” (translated as punch) because of its unusual shape but was later renamed to Baci, which affectionately means kisses in Italian.
Today Baci is still made in Perugia, Italy and follows its original recipe, which continues to be well-loved by all. Each smooth dark chocolate is enveloped in Gianduia (delicious milk chocolate, whipped and blended with hazelnut paste) and then is sprinkled lovingly with small pieces of hazelnuts and finally topped with a hazelnut. A special message of love (written in five languages) is wrapped around each chocolate and then beautifully sealed in its signature silver and blue foil wrapper adorned with tiny stars.
To truly discover the true essence of Baci is a difficult one, but it can be described in a few well chosen Italian words. An irresistible chocolate, that expresses the core of a country surrounded by beauty, made with the finest ingredients and shaped by artisan masters.
